Livewell Management

1. Livewell should be filled early in the morning while the upper foot of surface water is at its coolest temperature. Add the appropriate amount of RejuvenadeTM necessary to treat the volume of water in your livewell and start your aerator running in order to oxygen load the livewell water before catching the first fish. After the first fish is caught, the aerator should run continuously throughout the day (the aerator pump should not use any more power than a through hull pump).

Grand Lake

Grove, OK.  The XFL-Extreme Fishing League sponsored by Skeeter Boats held its 3rd event of the season on Grand Lake on Sunday, May 22.  After enduring terrible weather for the first two events of the season, Mother Nature finally showed some mercy and provided the anglers with sunny to partly cloudy skies, light to moderate winds and warm temperatures.  Making things more interesting was due to recent rains the lake had risen to almost 3′ above normal pool and flooding acres of willows, weeds and bushes.  Water clarity ranged from downright muddy in the upper reaches to slightly stained in the lower end of the lake.  The water and weather conditions gave the anglers lots of choices on a plan of attack.  Early reports indicated lots of fish being caught out of the shallows and a few reports showing fish starting to get on their summer patterns.  During the week the GRDA was releasing quite a bit of water through the dam and creating good current flows.  This typically sets up for a good main-lake point and ledge bite during the post-spawn.  However, the GRDA cut the flows to zero on Friday afternoon and maintained the zero flow rates through Sunday.

George Baker Services set for Saturday

As reported in the Oolagah Lake Leader…

The service for George Baker Jr., 82, of Talala is 10 am Saturday, May 14 at First Christian Church in Owasso. Arrangements are being handled by Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso.

Baker and his sister Shirley Hand moved to Talala in 1943, attended Talala School and Oklahoma A&M College. He married Vera Hayes of Winganon in 1953, transferred to Miami College, earned an Air Force scholarship and returned to Stillwater.

He was commissioned as an Air Force officer, earned his jet pilot wings, served in Europe, was promoted to Captain and served in the Vietnam War flying combat missions in supersonic F-100 jet aircraft.

He separated from the Air Force in 1965, moved the family which by then included three children to the Baker Ranch in Talala, enrolled the boys in Oologah-Talala Schools and taught at Owasso
He joined the Air National Guard as a test pilot and was promoted to the rank of major, purchased his own plane, and continued to fly, raise beef cattle and his boys.

In writing the family history for the 1990 History of Talala book, Vera ended the biography by noting, “George retired and enjoys the pursuit of piscatorial prospects (fishing anytime, anywhere).”

That continued through Tuesday morning.

Lake Texoma

April 17th, Durant, OK – The XFL-Extreme Fishing League presented by Skeeter Boats hosted its second event of the season on Lake Texoma.  For the second straight tournament the anglers had to deal with difficult weather conditions.  The first event was plagued with high winds.  This event had several fun elements to deal with: wind, torrential rains, flash floods and lightning.  The only thing that was missing was tornadoes.  Thankfully the twisters never materialized.

Pre-tournament reports indicated the bite being tough for some and good for others.  Early reports showed fish to be in various stages of the spawn and lots to bass being caught on weighted and un-weighted senkos, spinnerbaits and jigs.  For several years Texoma suffered through a record drought and was over 10′ below normal.  This allowed a lot of weeds and bushes to grow between the low water level and the normal pool bank line.  The lake had since returned to normal levels thereby flooding all the vegetation creating lots of cover for the bass.  Another variable was the shad spawn.  Many anglers reported seeing shad right on the banks spawning with bass periodically feeding on them.

Lake Eufaula March 20, 2016

Eufaula, OK – The XFL-Extreme Fishing League presented by Skeeter Boats kicked off the 2016 tournament season on sprawling, wind-swept Lake Eufaula on Sunday March 20, 2016.  Prior to this event the Oklahoma weather had been unseasonably warm with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the 50s.  This weather pattern had been going on for weeks causing water temperatures to rise, the dogwoods and redbuds to bloom, the geese to start nesting and the bass to move to the shallows to begin their spawning ritual.
